Hajj & Umrah

Hajj & Umrah

The history of Hajj in Islam dates back to a period thousands of years before the mission of the Prophet Muhammad, specifically to the era of the Prophet Ibrahim Al-Khalil. Islamic sources state that Abraham was residing in the desert of the Levant, and when his slave Hagar gave birth to him Ishmael, his wife Sarah was greatly distressed by that because he had not had a child by her, so she was hurting Abraham with Hagar and distressing him, so Abraham complained about this to God, so he commanded him to bring out Ishmael. And his mother left her, so he said: “Oh Lord, to what place?” He said: “To my sanctuary, my security, and the first place I created from my land, which is Mecca,” and Gabriel descended upon him with lightning, carrying Hagar, Ishmael, and Abraham. Abraham would not pass by a beautiful place in which there were trees, palm trees, and crops except that he would say: “O Gabriel, to here, to here, to here.” So Gabriel would say: “Do not go, do not go,” until he reached Mecca and placed it in the place of the House, and Abraham had promised Sarah that he would not go down until he returned to her. When they camped in that place, there were trees, so Hagar threw on that tree a cloak that she had with her, so she took shade under it. When Abraham sent them away and laid them down and wanted to depart from them to Sarah, Hagar said to him: “Why did you leave us in this place where there is neither food nor water nor crops?” So Abraham said to him: “My Lord is the one who commanded me to put you in this place.” Then he left them and when he reached my limit It was a mountain in Dhi Tuwa. Abraham turned to them and said: “Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in a valley without crops near Your Sacred House. Our Lord, let them establish prayer, so make the hearts of the people Descend to them and provide them with fruits that they may be grateful. (37) [Ibrahim: 37]. Then he departed and Hagar remained.
